May 2017

The recent end of season presentation evening for Conference football team Barrow A.F.C. saw not only the usual player of the season type prizes but also one very special award for Furness Mark Lodge No 36 member Bob Herbert.
Bob with his commemorative trophy
Club chairman Paul Casson presented him with a special trophy to mark over 50 years’ service for the club. During that time Bob has been both a reporter and supporter of the club.

In his professional life Bob was a sports reporter and later sports editor with the local paper. But in addition to this paid work he has put in many voluntary hours as the producer of the club match-day programme.  For over half a century, with a few years off when the club dropped into the lower divisions and didn’t require programmes, Bob has always been the driving force behind the programme.

As well as compiling and writing articles for the publication he has also been the ghost writer for assorted chairmen and managers. Such has been his commitment that his much loved holidays abroad having always been based around when the club had blank week-ends or away fixtures.

This season was Bob’s last as programme editor and at the presentation evening he was described as a great legend of the club when it was announced that he was being awarded with not just a commemorative trophy but also life membership.

Bob’s efforts on behalf of the Bluebirds goes back prior to 1972 when they were still a member of the football league.

The Herbert name still lives on amongst the club volunteers as his son Darren is the match day announcer.
